A very simple question but a very difficult one answer. The 4 archangels commonly accepted by all are the archangels named Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
Others name the 7 Archangels for the days of the week as Michael (Sunday), Gabriel (Monday), Raphael (Tuesday), Uriel (Wednesday), Selaphiel (Thursday), Raguel or Jegudiel (Friday), and Barachiel (Saturday) but frankly this makes no sense to me at all.
Again many people say there are 7, names being Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Jophiel, Ariel, Azrael, and Chamuel but I cannot agree with this either because where is Uriel?
In the bible, the Book of Enoch mentions 7 angels that are considered the seven archangels: Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, Uriel, Saraqael, Raguel, and Remiel.
Then we have 12 Archangel who represent the signs of the Zodiac, named:
- Aries: Archangel Ariel – “The Lioness of God”
- Taurus: Archangel Chamuel – “He Who Sees God”
- Gemini: Archangel Zadkiel – “The Righteousness of God”
- Cancer: Archangel Gabriel – “Strength of God”
- Leo: Archangel Raziel – “The Secrets of God”
- Virgo: Archangel Metatron – “Lesser YHVH (My Name is in Him”
- Libra: Angel Jophiel – “Beauty of God”
- Scorpio: Archangel Jeremiel – “Mercy of God”
- Sagittarius: Archangel Raguel – “Friend of God”
- Capricorn: Archangel Azrael – “Whom God Helps”
- Aquarius: Archangel Uriel – “The Light of God”
- Pisces: Archangel Sandalphon – “Brother Together”
Again I have a tough time accepting that.
Likewise I have difficulty accepting statement that there are 15 archangels, especially when it come to angel card decks and oracle cards. I think we just have to accept that people desperately want to believe in angels, (and I do by the way) plus there are “new age” ideas that want them portrayed as all sweetness and light and the prettiest of images, and will insist of them almost all being female (that’s easier to make pretty pictures from!!!).
For me, the truth is that angel archetypes make sense, archetypal universal energies that are attached to cards and names and sometimes real angels, who come with traits and characteristics that we can relate to for a specific purpose. However I truly believe that we should not see angel cards as being so very different from tarot cards. I get that people need love and understanding more than reality at certain times in out life but we should not forget that most of the angels and archangels were/are male as we can tell from their names, and that some were redeemed fallen angels and most capable of mistakes. Thus we should NOT cut out anything negative from angel card in my opinion, nor should we ignore reversed cards.
Our full deck of angel cards is 78 cards, of what I call the “sweetness and light” sort, and the “pretty pretty” type plus some that I consider a little more blunt and realistic. Here the the names of the archangels in the deck of which there are 24.
